Folding phones are set to be all the rage in 2018, offering a way to deliver even larger screen sizes while keeping the handset pocketable. ZTE has actually delivered such a device, Samsung is expected to do so by the end of the year or early 2019, and now LG has also weighed in with their own design, revealed in a patent application. The device features a fully foldable single-piece screen with a very small bend radius and appears to be quite narrow when folded. On the outside, there may be an exteal screen and fingerprint reader. Alteatively, it may have a movable cover which reveals a small display. As usual, patents are not proof a device is on the way, but it can be guaranteed that if Samsung leads LG will follow. The full patent, which was filed in July 2017, can be seen here. Only a day after its release to Insiders in the Fast and Skip  Ahead Rings, Microsoft has released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17074.1002 to Insiders in the Slow ring. This build is the same as the version of Build 17074 released last week, but it comes with 2 additional fixes. Microsoft has fixed the issue causing AMD PCs to become unbootable and it has also fixed the issue causing certain devices to hang on the boot screen after upgrading if virtualization is enabled in the BIOS. That means Slow Ring users get Improvements to Edge, Updates to Handwriting Recognition, Fonts on Settings and more. Insiders can download the update by Checking for Updates in Settings. We all know that Google is inteally working on a flexible OS like the rumoured Andromeda from Microsoft. This flexible operating system was first spotted in 2016. We recently heard that this operating system has been made compatible with the new Google’s Pixelbook convertible that runs ChromeOS. Well today, ArsTechnica managed to port the unreleased beta version of Fuchsia OS to their Pixelbook. As we said earlier, this is a beta release and is pretty buggy but as we know that the USB Ports, Touch and other important ports and components like Etheet are working alright. Other main features include a Home screen, Google Search Bar, Lockscreen, Card based layouts and more. Most of these UI and UX elements are made with placeholders but it is quite impressive to see how Google is working on evolving on this flexible Operating System that changes from a PC interface to a tablet interface to a Phone interface and the running apps adopt the same properly. In order to boot Fuchsia on your pixelbook, you will have to load a bootable USB with Zedboot (via the network boot method) and then host the operating system and use the network to send the files over the network to see the booti microsoft news...

We reported a few days ago that major European trade organizations also weighed in on Microsoft’s side in a long-running 2013 data jurisdiction case, with Microsoft is currently in the US Supreme Court fighting a data request by the DoJ for information held in Ireland on their servers on an Irish resident. Now Microsoft’s chief counsel Brad Smith has revealed that this was just one of 23 amicus briefs filed with the US Supreme Court in support of Microsoft’s position that the DoJ should request data held by Microsoft overseas via normal treaty process rather than forcing Microsoft to hand it over without any local approval, which may breach rules in the originating country. “On Thursday, 289 different groups and individuals from 37 countries signed 23 different legal briefs supporting Microsoft’s position that Congress never gave law enforcement the power to ignore treaties and breach Ireland’s sovereignty in this way,” Microsoft’s president and chief legal officer Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. “How could it? The govement relies on a law that was enacted in 1986, before anyone conceived of cloud computing.” Some of the briefs are by other major tech companies like Apple, Amaz microsoft news...

Facebook’s new Instagram update makes the app act more like a messaging app. Now, Instagram users can see when their friends were the last update in the Direct Messaging section of the app. It works very much like WhatsApp as well, in that users can tu this off for more privacy, but will also lose the ability to see their friends active statuses as well. This feature is available for iOS, Android and Windows 10.It’s worth noting at this point that Facebook is also testing a standalone messaging client for Instagram called Direct. Much like the social media company did with Messenger, this will pull Direct Messaging away from the main Instagram app, and silo it into its own feed for those who are more interested in using Instagram like Snapchat. Facebook has been beta-testing that app in a few limited countries on Android and the iPhone. This new update just brings Facebook one step closer towards spinning Instagram into a messaging platform all its own. Thanks for the tip, Ben Ward. microsoft news...

Imagine being able to generate high-quality photos just be describing them to a computer.  This sci-fi scenario is now a reality, thanks to Microsoft’s new AI tool. Drawing Bot created the above image simply from the description of “a bird with a yellow body, black wings and a short beak,”  using a new technique where the AI pays close attention to individual words when generating images from caption-like text descriptions, resulting in a 3-fold boost in image quality compared to other text-to-image generation techniques. The bot can do more than just birds, being able to draw everything from ordinary pastoral scenes, such as grazing livestock, to the absurd, such as a floating double-decker bus. “If you go to Bing and you search for a bird, you get a bird picture. But here, the pictures are created by the computer, pixel by pixel, from scratch,” said Xiaodong He, a principal researcher and research manager in the Deep Leaing Technology Center at Microsoft’s research lab in Redmond, Washington. “These birds may not exist in the real world — they are just an aspect of our computer’s imagination of birds.” The team started with CaptionBot, which automatically wrote captions for ima microsoft news...

Mozilla’s Firefox has been praised for its dramatic speed increase with Firefox Quantum. The firm is aiming to make its browser app even better with Firefox 58 (via Neowin). The firm will be adding a new 2-tiered compiler to the browser, compiling code with a baseline compiler compiling code 10 times faster than the optimising compiler. This is to take advantage of the WebAssembly streaming API, and let the browser compile code on the fly. Mozilla’s Lin Clark explains just how the new compiler works in tandem with the WebAssembly streaming API to make Firefox faster overall. If you start compiling the code earlier, you’ll finish compiling it earlier. That’s what streaming compilation does… makes it possible to start compiling the .wasm file as soon as possible. When you download a file, it doesn’t come down in one piece. Instead, it comes down in a series of packets. Before, as each packet in the .wasm file was being downloaded, the browser network layer would put it into an ArrayBuffer. Then, once that was done, it would move that ArrayBuffer over to the Web VM (aka the JS engine). That’s when the WebAssembly compiler would start compiling. But there’s no good reason to keep the c microsoft news...

Back in September last year, Slack announced a new brand new feature called Shared Channels which connects two separate organizations, creating a common channel for both sides to make use of Slack’s features and platform integrations when working together. Shared Channel differs from Guest Access which keeps admin control limited to one party. While Microsoft Teams, Slack’s primary competitor is still working on full Guess Access feature, Slack today announced a major update to its Shared Channel feature. Read about it below. Slack’s new Private Shared Channels will allow organizations to have collaboration with others involving classified information. With the new feature, admins can now choose whether a specific shared channel is public or private for their respective workspace. This means that a Shared Channel can be public or private on both workspaces, or public on one side and private on the other. Slack today announced new Administration section to provide admins with a consolidated way to manage Shared Channels for their workspace. With the new section, admins can do the following: View all of the exteal workspaces their workspace is connected to See how many—and which—c microsoft news...

Microsoft is currently embroiled in a long-running 2013 data jurisdiction case, with Microsoft is currently in the US Supreme Court fighting a data request by the DoJ for information held in Ireland on their servers on an Irish resident. The DoJ has argued that since Microsoft controls the servers they could easily comply with the request while Microsoft has argued that the request should be passed through Irish authorities and normal “mutual legal assistance requests” channels. The EU has already filed an amicus brief explaining European privacy law to the US Supreme court , and now Law360 reports that major European trade organizations have also told the U.S. Supreme Court that if the justices overtu a decision quashing a warrant served on Microsoft and allow the U.S. Department of Justice to grab data stored overseas, they would place inteational companies in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between violating European privacy laws or an American search warrant. The organizations, which represent major industrial companies in Germany, Poland, France and Ireland, on Thursday filed an amicus brief supporting Microsoft and urging the justices to uphold a 2016 ruli microsoft news...

Microsoft has become increasingly aggressive in pushing people who downloaded their Cortana for Android app to integrate the app into the Android OS, with one of their new features tuing the app into rather a nice overlay for reminders on your home screen as can be seen in the screenshot above. Now unlocking your phone needs to be always as fast as possible, so tuing on that element is never a good idea, but Cortana for the home screen is actually pretty slick. With the overlay, Microsoft concentrates on one of Cortana’s strengths – setting reminders, and slides the sidebar in smoothly from the left when you click on the floating Cortana halo. After that one tap, the app is also fully gesture responsive, allowing you to slide it further for your news feed, and slide it even more to dismiss. If you have bothered to download Cortana on your Android phone, you probably owe it to yourself to try out the Home screen integration feature, and I suspect you might keep it around. If you own an Android device then you can download the latest update from Google Play Store below. Do let us know your thoughts on the latest update in the Idea section below. One of the rather superfluous apps in Windows 10, even more than Candy Crush Saga, is the Windows 10 Messaging app, which is meant to keep track of messages sent to you over LTE from your mobile operator and SMS messages sent via Skype SMS Relay service, but don’t actually let you send messages. The app, which was last updated in July 2017, has now seen an update for Insiders in the Fast Ring to version 3.36.14001.0, which brings along a more attractive fluent design, as can be seen in the screenshot above.  It is the first major update since 2016 when Microsoft removed Skype integration from the app. It is suspected that move may be related to Microsoft’s Always-Connected PC strategy, which should see many more PCs shipping with built-in LTE service when carrier SMS messages will become more common.  It is not, however, clear if the app will ever become more functional, beyond getting a cosmetic makeover. There is no evidence the update is connected with Microsoft’s rumoured Surface Phone, which will presumably need a much more functional app as found on Windows 10 Mobile. There has been an increasing momentum around folding smartphones, which would let smartphone screen sizes escape from the confines of being pocketable. Despite interest from a number of companies it was ZTE which brought the first mode smartphone with a dual-screen design, the ZTE Axon M, exclusive to AT&T. The device has had a middling reception, with reviewers criticizing the thickness of the device and Android’s somewhat clunky support for dual screens. This does not seem to have put the company off, however, with  ZTE’s vice president of marketing Jeff Yee telling Engadget in an interview at CES 2018 that consumers who purchased the device like it, and that associated issues were simply because it’s “something new.” He said the company planned to continue to support it with further updates but would also continue to experiment with the form factor, including reducing bezel size and eventually eliminating the dual-screen design for a completely seamless screen. The space is expected to heat up over the next year, with Microsoft apparently working on their rumoured Surface Phone, which is expected to share significant design elements with the ZTE Axon M, while Samsung is b microsoft news...

With Windows 8, Microsoft included a helpful volume popup and media control widget, akin to that on what was then called Windows Phone so that when users pressed the volume keys on their devices, they could also change the media playing as well. As Windows 10 has become more desktop focused, some users have found it more cumbersome than it is worth. Not to say that the app isn’t useful, that would be untrue, but on a desktop device with dedicated media keys, it simply isn’t necessary. To make matters worse for users who were irritated by what could be perceived as redundancy, Microsoft requires the overlay widget stay on the screen for 5 seconds at a minimum, and mousing over it resets the counter. So, while you can’t get rid of the overlay directly with built-in Windows tools, there’s a third-party tool that lets you hide it (via Winfuture.de.) With Hide Volume OSD, you can completely block the Windows Volume overlay from showing up when you press either the volume or media keys on your PC. When you install the app, it tuns in the background like any other utility and you have the ability to run it either silently in the background or with the system tray which gives you more con microsoft news...

While the world was recovering from the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, F-Secure found a new security issue which will allow hackers to gain full control of the laptops in merely 30 seconds. The new vulnerability was found in  Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) that allowed any hacker to bypass the login and security screen to gain access in just 30 seconds. For those unaware, AMT is a feature used by IT admins to remotely upgrade, repair and update the PCs, and workstations. As you might have guessed, it is used usually by enterprises and companies to keep a track of software and hardware used within the organization which makes it even more dangerous. This is also not the first time someone has found a vulnerability in AMT. F-Secure explained how someone could use this vulnerability to hack any PC with AMT. The company also noted that this vulnerability will allow the hacker to bypass any security measure no matter how good it is. The hacker just needs to physically access the laptop and go into BIOS. Here they can select the Intel’s Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) and enter “admin” as the password. Once done, all the security features go down and the hacker microsoft news...
