Every week numerous games release on Xbox One. While many are substantial experience like Shadow Warrior 2 and The Surge, there are a few hidden gems here and there. Many of these smaller games have either caught the public’s eye or are just stellar experiences which all Xbox One owners should try out. To kick off our first such segment, we’re going to be discussing Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island, Voodoo Vince: Remastered and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.

Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island

Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is an average game which is let down by its short duration and technical problems on Xbox One. Despite its amazing and hilarious voice acting, its visual and frame rate shortcomings are much too severe. The game needs a substantial amount of optimization on consoles. If you’re looking for a casual platformer which can be completed in a few hours, then this is the game for you. However, it has so many performance issues that the average gamer will likely stop playing out of sheer frustration. Right Nice Games need to issue a patch soon or disk tarnishing their game forever.

Voodoo Vince: Remastered

Voodoo Vince: Remastered is a good experience which still holds up well after all these years. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have better camera controls and visuals. While it’s crisp, the world looks flat and it’s clearly just the same version running at a higher resolution. Beep Industries could’ve done so much more here but they chose not to. Not only that, it would’ve also appealed to more people had it received a more substantial upgrade. If the developers wanted a sequel, they should’ve put more attention into their project. As it stands, Voodoo Vince: Remastered is only for those who are familiar with the original. There’s no way younger gamers will pick this one up.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a phenomenal semi-open world adventure which may feel slightly dated due to its outmoded combat mechanics. Despite that though, the hand-drawn visuals are mind-blowing to say the least. Additionally, the ability to instantly switch to the original version’s 8-bit graphics makes it a worthy trip down memory lane. Not only is Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap challenging, but it’s a step above the majority of modern platformers due to its semi-open world structure. In many ways, the game makes you realize just how much  today’s action platformers have become stale and compliant over the years. This is a game every Xbox One owner should have in their collection because it teaches you a little about the hobby’s history along the way.

If you’re going to pick up one of these games, we would recommend Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. It’s almost a perfect game and you’ll be blown away by every aspect of the title like we were. You won’t be disappointed.
