Take-Two reveals Grand Theft Auto V has shipped over 80 million copies alongside other sales figures

Take-Two Interactive had their earnings call this morning where they shared a lot of details about the future of the company and upcoming projects. Besides hinting that a major franchise was getting another installment, which could be anything really, the company shared sales figures for games like Grand Theft Auto V, Mafia III and NBA 2K17. All of these games are popular franchises which have sold surprisingly well despite games like Mafia III being panned by critics.

The company started with their juggernaut, Grand Theft Auto V, and announced that the game had shipped over 80 million units to retails. Note that these are shipped figures, not sold-through estimates to consumers. Despite that, it’s still a remarkable achievement and shows that retailers still want to stock up on this game. There must be strong demand. The fact that even years later Grand Theft Auto V tops charts is proof of that.

Mafia III is probably the weakest of the bunch. Until now, the game has shipped just 5 million units. While 5 million is a great figure, it’s surprising given the fact that it’s a multiplatform title from an established franchise. There was a lot of hype around this game. The negative reviews definitely hurt the title more than Take-Two anticipated.

Lastly, Take-Two continues its dominance in the sports genre too…well, at least basketball. NBA 2K17 is nearly at 8 million units shipped. The NBA 2K games are stellar and every year they manage to innovate even more. Despite their stocks taking a dive when they announced the Red Dead Redemption 2 delay, it still shows a healthy company, probably the healthiest in the business given the stupendous sales of Grand Theft Auto V.
