Here’s everything you need to know about Call of Duty: WWII

Game Informer recently sat down with Sledgehammer Games to discuss Call of Duty: WWII, Activision latest installment in the series. While the article is quite long and contains a lot of information many readers will find quite dry, we thought we’d break down the main points for you. Call of Duty: WWII looks like it might be one of the best games coming out this year and that’s saying a lot given the recent disappointments in the Call of Duty franchise. The highlights are as follows:

  • Call of Duty: WWII’s campaign takes place in Europe in 1944-1945. Some of the locations are Normandy, Cobra, Train, Marigny, Aachen and Hurtgen Forest.
  • You play as Private Ronald Daniels who is a 19-year-old from Texas. For some odd reason everyone calls him Red.
  • As you know, there’s no health regeneration in the campaign or free ammunition. You have to ask your squad for these items.
  • There are certain events in the game where you have to perform an extraordinary acts of heroism. These may just be quick time events though.
  • You can play as American, British or French troops in the game. Female characters are also there.
  • Because it focuses on Nazi Germany, there are swastikas in the game. I’m not sure what they’re going to do for the German version which may ban the game.
  • You’re looking for stolen art in Zombies mode and that’s the premise of your encounter with the undead Nazis. The Nazis knew the war was almost over so they created the Zombie Project as a way to fight back. Like with any such plans, the creatures couldn’t be controlled and wrecked havoc.
  • Tesla weapons are the new Wonder Weapons in Call of Duty: WWII.
  • The Zombies mode is pretty similar to previous games with some enhancements but don’t expect something truly revolutionary.
  • Multiplayer Headquarters is an absolutely enormous space where you meet others. It takes place a few days after the Normandy landings.
  • Headquarters will feature proximity chat so you can communicate with those around you easily.
  • Headquarters also has rewards for completing certain objectives. Activision wants Call of Duty: WWII to be an experience which brings all sorts of players back.
  • There are certain multiplayer events like in Destiny where you have to team up with other players to defend Headquarters. For example, the Nazis might suddenly send a fleet of fighter airplanes which you have to take down from the ground.
  • The multiplayer component is divided into Division which are class-based.
  • Multiplayer still features gun mods which I found to be quite annoying.

I’m mostly excited about Call of Duty: WWII’s campaign to be honest. I also hope the multiplayer component has a cooperative element like Destiny. While we still don’t know all the details of the game, this definitely sounds like the most inclusive Call of Duty game ever made. There is a greater focus on working together than before. We can’t wait to get our hands on it in November!
