Bing went down today and no-one noticed

Well, that’s embarrassing! Leading cloud service provider Microsoft has just seen its leading search engine, with 30% market share in USA and around 10% in Europe, go down for more than an hour.

In fact, if you visit status.bing.com the site (at the time of writing) still says:

Our services aren’t available right now

We’re working to restore all services as soon as possible. Please check back soon.
Ref A: F7C1DE37B86C485189F8EEF94C9D3187 Ref B: LON04EDGE0421 Ref C: 2017-08-15T19:46:10Z

This is in non-rendered HTML as above, suggesting Microsoft’s cloud engineers are not having the best time of it today.

More embarrassing however is that hardly anyone appears to have noticed. The news is not trending on twitter and hardly any Microsoft-focussed sites are writing about it.

In fact, worse affected appears to be DuckDuckGo, who posted this message:

The issue, which started around 3 hours ago and lasted some hours, appears to have mostly resolved itself, but except for providing infrastructure to the other search also-runs, it seems Microsoft still has a lot of work to do to win over consumers who appear all too happy to turn back to Google, without so much as an angry tweet.
