Sony briefly lost control of their twitter account this evening, as evidenced by a number of tweets being posted purportedly by a security group called OurMine.

The so-called white hats make a habit of breaking into companies to alert them of security holes, and on this occasion appears to be claiming much more than just the Twitter account, but also saying they breached the PlayStation Network Databases.

The tweets have now been deleted, signifying that Sony has regained control of their twitter account, but can be seen preserved in the screenshot above.

Sony does not have the best record for security, having seen their corporate network and also the PlayStation network being breached repeatedly, losing hundreds of millions of dollars in the process.

OurMine is certainly capable of such a hack, having been involved in a number of very high-profile hacks over the last two years, most recently including HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The breach of the PlayStation Network is of course not confirmed, but given OurMine’s history it may be wise to change your password there and, if shared, elsewhere, and to keep a close eye on your accounts if you have payment information there.

Update: The PlayStation Facebook account may also have been , though at present everything appears to have been restored.

IBTimes reports that the hack of the social media accounts was achieved using PlayStation’s Sprout Social management account and that they had access to user registration information such as names and email addresses.

They, however, denied any intention to distribute these, saying “we are a security group. We choose the people who have bad security to hack them and notify them about their security.”

So far Sony has not made any comment.
