SwiftKey for iPhone gets early sign of major new feature

Microsoft today released an update for SwiftKey app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. This new update introduces an interesting new feature which may be a prelude of more to come.

Version 2.1.1 of the app brings a new Clipboard feature which lets users save snippets of text for later use.

The feature is activated by pressing and holding the Globe key on the keyboard and may be a prelude to a more comprehensive cloud-based clipboard which can be shared across devices.

This is not just speculation, as Microsoft has said in May 2017 that they would be adding a cloud-based clipboard to Swiftkey which would let users transfer snippets of text, photos and even gifs from a Windows 10 PC to your iPhone and presumably vice versa. The move is part of Microsoft’s effort to weave Windows 10 into the increasingly mobile workflow of Microsoft users, even on other platforms like iOS where Microsoft does not have deep access to the operating system.

More mundanely the update also fixes an issue where URLs and other copy and pasted text were being included in predictions. This will no longer occur. It also addresses some accessibility bugs.

SwiftKey for iOS already supports over 100 languages on iOS and also added support for following 10 languages.

  • Bislama
  • Lower Sorbian
  • Estonian
  • Ga
  • Kabardian
  • Limburgish
  • Yakut (Sakha)
  • Silesian
  • Venetan
  • Makhuwa
