Microsoft to build new power station with a capacity that could power 18,000 homes

Microsoft Azure is now available in 36 regions around the world, with plans announced for 6 additional regions. As the demand for cloud computing is sky rocketing, Microsoft is always in the mood for expanding their data center capacity to meet their customer’s needs.

Microsoft already has 4 operational data centres in Dublin. Last year, it got permission from local council in South Dublin County to build four more data centres. In addition to Microsoft, other leading cloud companies like Google also have their data centers in Dublin region. Due to the high concentration of data centres, the demand for power has gone up quickly and the local government is struggling to keep up with the demand.

In order to have uninterrupted power supply for its data centers, Microsoft is building its own power station in Dublin. Microsoft will install 16 gas-powered generators at a site in Clondalkin that can generate up to 18 megawatts of electricity. This output capacity would be enough to power about 18,000 homes.

EirGrid is a state-owned company that manages and operates the transmission grid across Ireland. EirGrid is now working on a major project to reinforce the electricity demands of data centers in the Dublin region. If EirGrid fails to provide the needed power in the future, Microsoft will use their new power station to keep their data centers up and running.
