$700 premium smart lock by ex-Microsoftie promise effortless keyless entry

Premium products are currently in vogue, as illustrated ably by the iPhone X, Surface Studio or the ill-fated Juicero.

CEO of digital lock maker Otto, ex-Microsoftie Sam Jadallah is hoping to share the fate of the first two rather than the last.

His high-end door lock will offer key-less entry to authorized users identified via Bluetooth with apps on the phones of users. Users will simply have to press the single button to gain entry, and unauthorized users will be kept out by the marine-grade 316 stainless steel construction of the $699 replacement lock designed to be no larger than the mechanical deadbolt it replaces.

Like most smart locks users will also be able to remotely share and revoke access privileges, and see full logs of the coming and going of users.

Otto’s staff is not just drawn from Microsoft, but many also come from Apple, and some even from Nokia.

Apple may have inspired the alternate entry method, which works a bit like a combination lock, letting users twist the circular button to enter an entry code.

The lock lacks a backup key (though it has a backup battery), with users being warned a few days before the battery is about to expire.

“We wanted to create an experience that allows families to share their space with others while enhancing security,” said Otto founder and CEO Sam Jadallah in a statement. “In an industry desperately needing a replacement to the key and keypad’s lax security, we’ve eliminated the keyhole — along with a physical keypad — to create the most secure digital lock ever made with the best-in-class security, grand design, and industry-leading performance.”

Pre-orders are already open for the lock, available in mineral black, steel silver, and natural gold, which is being delivered this fall. For a limited time, buyers get free installation, worth $150.
