A few weeks ago Microsoft revealed that it was partnering with Valve to bring Steam content to Windows Mixed Reality.

Then Valve’s Joe Ludwig said “Working with Microsoft to include SteamVR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers. With a broad range of hardware options available from leading PC manufacturers, the Steam community will have more choice than ever to experience the amazing potential of VR” said

We then heard that the feature, which will massively expand the near non-existent Windows Mixed Reality app library, would not be ready for the launch on the 17th October 2017.

Today at Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality event Microsoft confirmed the feature was still on track, and that developers would from today have access to the Windows Mixed Reality SteamVR preview so they can try out their experiences.

Microsoft also promised the feature would come to consumers by the holiday, though notably still in preview.

While access to SteamVR’s library was a great move by Microsoft, it is still far from a slamdunk for the platform, as VR in general, on all platforms, still lacks its killer app, and it remains to be seen if this will arrive soon enough to ensure the success of Microsoft’s venture.
