Microsoft Edge could launch on Android and iOS: Update – confirmed

Windows 10’s upcoming updates are going to make the operating system work better with Android and iPhone devices. Microsoft will offer a number of connected experiences that will allow users to easily transfer their work between their smartphone and Windows 10 PC. But due to the lack of Microsoft’s Edge browser on Android and iOS, that’s getting increasingly harder for Microsoft.

Now, a new report from FrAndroid claims that Microsoft could be bringing Microsoft Edge to Android and iOS in the future. The company is currently planning on making Edge cross-platform, which will likely enable it to take the cross-device experiences in Windows 10 a small step forward. By bringing Microsoft Edge to Android and iOS, the company will finally let users of Edge in Windows 10 sync their bookmarks and browser history with their smartphone, and that’s a really important feature for some. The browser would also have strong Bing integration, according to the report.

Microsoft Edge coming to Android and iOS could be fantastic news for those who use Edge every day on their Windows 10 PCs. But don’t get your hopes up yet — Microsoft has previously stated that the software maker has no plans to make Edge cross-platform. That was from 2015, so it’s possible Microsoft’s plans have changed by now. However, the limitations posed by Apple on iOS will also likely prevent Microsoft from using Edge’s own EdgeHTML browser engine on the iPhone. Plus, bringing EdgeHTML from Windows to Android or even iOS could require a lot of work and investment from the work — but it’s worth noting that a core part of Edge’s JavaScript engine is already cross-platform.

For now, take this with a grain of salt. We have reached out to Microsoft for an official statement on this, and we will update it with more info if we hear back.

Update: The news is now confirmed, with the browser set to be released for iOs and Android in beta.

The browser features synching of your favourites and reading list, but not tabs, but does have Continue on my PC supports. In addition it uses the WebKit rendering engine, making it the first Microsoft browser to do so.

Those interested can sign up to the beta here .
