Oculus Rift with Touch controllers now just $399, competing with cheapest Windows Mixed Reality bundles

In the summer Oculus announced a price drop for their Oculus Rift headset taking it to an astonishing $399 for the headset and controllers, around half the launch price of the bundle before the discount.

Now at the Oculus Connect conference, the company has announced that the discount is now permanent.

This makes the headset competitive with the cheapest Windows Mixed Reality headset and controlled bundle, from Acer, which also costs $399.

The Oculus Rift headset offers advanced display technology combined with its precise, low-latency constellation tracking system which enables the sensation of presence. Oculus Touch controllers with support for natural gestures and finger movement create a sense of true hand presence for more realistic, memorable, and tactile VR.

Remember however that you still need a fairly high-end Windows PC to enjoy Oculus Rift. The recommended PC specs are.

  • Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
  • CPU: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • Memory: 8GB+ RAM
  • Video Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • USB Ports: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
  • OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

Windows Mixed Reality however supports integrated graphics and 20,000 UWP apps, possible offering somewhat more value for money.

Before the announcement analysts have predicted the WMR headsets would outsell Oculus Rift 2:1. It remains to be seen what the impact of this latest development will be on Microsoft’s ambitions.
