Microsoft taken to court over Lumia 950 / 950 XL LED patent infringement

A company which bills itself as an inventor-owned patent licensing entity is suing Microsoft in the U.S. District Court in Marshall, Texas, claiming the company’s now-defunct Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL infringed on its LED-related patents.

The issue appears to be related to the triple LED flash on the Lumia 950 range, with Lemaire Illumination Technologies LLC also recently having sued LG over the use of their LED flash.

The company holds a 2010 patent for “Apparatus and method for pulsed L.E.D. illumination” which speaks about varying the voltage to the LED flash in a way to generate different colour tones and several other related patents which are:

• 9,119,266 – Pulsed L.E.D. illumination apparatus and method
• 6,095,661 – Method and apparatus for an L.E.D. flashlight
• 6,488,390 – Color-adjusted camera light and method

Microsoft is also accused of infringing 3 patents, suggesting Lemaire is doing the rounds collecting from smartphone OEMs.

Microsoft is no longer selling the Lumia 950 or any other Lumia handsets, and have recently said in their quarterly earnings revenue related to Windows Phone is now immaterial and will not be mentioned in future earnings.
