Microsoft Edge for Android comes out of beta

Microsoft Edge for Android has — after a brief testing period — exited beta on the Google Play Store (via Android Police).

Users on the Google Play Store will note that the app is no longer marked as an unreleased/testing app, and the latest changelog thanks users for their feedback. In an earlier update, Microsoft added a dark theme and password syncing, bringing the app up to par with its iOS (testflight) version.

Microsoft Edge on Android is built on the Chromium engine and is part of Microsoft’s efforts to build a browser app that syncs with the mainstream Windows 10 browser. While Microsoft’s new browser has yet to win the widespread acceptance of Chrome or even Firefox. This new mobile app is a step in that direction. Microsoft reasons correctly that if users can make use of Edge as the main browser they use on their PC on their phone, they’ll be more likely to use Edge period.

However It doesn’t offer much yet over rivals like Safari’s integration on the iPhone which lures many away from Chrome on phone, and it doesn’t yet have Chrome’s brand recognition. It’ll be an uphill battle, and we’ll be watching.
