Some of the Asus NovaGo’s features will not be ready till Spring next year

At Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit two Windows on ARM devices were announced, the HP Envy x2 and the Asus NovaGo.

Despite appearing ready, the HP Envy x2 is only shipping in Spring next year, while the Asus NovaGo should be hitting shelves shortly.

It turns out there may be a reason for HP’s delay, as it appears Windows 10 is not quite ready yet to support all the scenarios Microsoft envisions for the product.

In particular according to a slide deck from the  WinHEC Fall 2017 workshop discovered by WalkingCat, one important out of the box experience for Windows 10 on ARM will only be arriving with Redstone 4.

The ability to easily provision your device from Microsoft’s Mobile Plans app appears not yet available to carriers.

The feature would let users activate their embedded eSIM via the app, which would include an element of custom carrier interface developed by the carrier itself.

In the meantime, a more basic version called Seamless Cellular Provisioning, which uses a database of carrier settings, would still be available, but would presumably not allow users to as easily switch carriers or purchase plans.

For enterprise users, Microsoft is also planning to pilot a solution where companies could bulk-buy plans and users would be easily able to attach themselves to those.

Redstone 4 is, of course, the Spring update of 2018, and should hit devices around March or April 2018. By then we may have more than one Windows on ARM device to choose from, with both the HP Envy x2 and an unnamed Lenovo devices likely also available then.
