Synaptics announces mass production of in-display fingerprint sensors

Synaptics today announced the mass production of its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors with a top five OEM. As most smartphone these days come with infinity displays, placing the fingerprint sensor at the right position on the back of the device seems to be a headache for OEMs. Synaptics’ solution solves this problem as they provide optical fingerprint sensors that deliver one-touch high-resolution scanning through full cover glass. The Clear ID fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display when needed.

Synaptics claims that Clear ID will work with wet, dry and cold fingers, and since it’s protected by smartphone’s display glass (often Gorilla Glass), it is durable, scratchproof and waterproof. Synaptics highlighted that this solution is much better than Face unlock solutions like Face ID since users can securely unlock the device in situations including while it’s sitting on the table, at any angle, or while in a car mount. Synaptics also claims that Clear ID performance is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition and requires only one touch to access your smartphone.

Synaptics optical fingerprint sensors are available with SentryPoint technology, offering OEMs a wide-range of unique and highly secure authentication features including: Quantum Matcher for adaptive fingerprint template matching and authentication; PurePrint anti-spoof technology to examine fingerprint images using unique artificial intelligence technology to distinguish between spoofs and actual fingers; and SecureLink which combines support for TLS protocol with ECC authentication and AES encryption.

In the first half of next year, we can expect several smartphones with Synaptics Clear ID shipping worldwide.
