Microsoft adds several new calling capabilities in Teams

Microsoft today released a major update for Microsoft Teams to bring more calling capabilities that will allow organizations to switch from Skype for Business completely. Microsoft is adding full featured dialing capabilities, complete with call history, hold/resume, speed dial, transfer, forwarding, caller ID masking, extension dialing, multi-call handling, simultaneous ringing, voicemail, and text telephone (TTY) support.

To have these calling features in Teams, organizations need to have Phone System (formerly Cloud PBX) which is part of Office 365 E5 other Office 365 plans. Organizations can also get a Calling Plan (formerly known as PSTN Calling) for their users if needed.

Combining Calling Plan and Phone System in Office 365 can effectively replace traditional desk phones in organizations. Users can also enjoy a primary phone number and receive phone calls to and from outside of their organization. This is a much needed update and it brings Microsoft Teams one step closer in becoming into the primary client for calling and meetings in Office 365.
