Test finds Windows Defender merely “satisfactory”, far from best protection

When Microsoft launched Windows Defender as a general antivirus solution in Windows 8 bundled with all PCs it was thought that this would be the end of paid antivirus applications such as Kaspersky or Avast.

It turned out these companies are still around, and it may be for a good reason.

The German tech publication PC Magazin reports in their January 2018 edition that Windows Defender is merely “satisfactory” when it comes to protecting PC users, and that paid antivirus apps offer superior protection and services.

In their test, they praised Defender for few false positives and features such as the new Protected Folder. However, they noted that Defender was resource hungry and had a low detection rate, the worse compared to 11 other paid apps.

In contrast Bitdefender Total Security Multi Device 2018 and Kaspersky Total Security tied at first with 93 out of 100 possible points, followed by Avast Premier with 89 points.

They also note that paying for antivirus, which tends to cost 60 to 100 Euro per year, often brought additional benefits besides virus protection, including web security, VPN, ad blocking, spam filters and more.
