Facebook takes another step to fight fake accounts, will require Aadhar while signing up

If you’re living in India then you have surely heard about Aadhar and for others, it is something similar to Social Security Number. Indian Government has taken steps this year to make Aadhar a mandatory Identification measure for Indian citizens. From linking Aadhar with Bank Accounts to connecting your SIM cards with Aadhar, Government has made sure every identity you have is connected to Aadhar.

Now it looks like Facebook is also taking help from Aadhar to make sure people don’t use Fake IDs on Facebook. The social media giant has confirmed to testing a measure to make sure people use real names on Facebook and discourage fake accounts.

We want to make sure people can use the names they’re known by on Facebook, and can easily connect with friends and family. This is a small test where we provide additional language when people sign up for an account to say that using the name on their Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise them. This is an optional prompt which we are testing. People are not required to enter the name on their Aadhaar card.

It has to be noted however that Facebook isn’t asking your Aadhar documents or Aadhar number for verification. The company is just suggesting users enter details as per their Aadhar Card. This might suggest that the company may be planning to link Aadhar to Facebook in the future to make sure people don’t make accounts with fake names.

We aren’t sure of the end game yet but this sure is a positive move from Facebook to tackle fake information on the social media network. How this pans out is still not sure and we will have to wait and see how much of a benefit it does for everyone using the platform.
