Microsoft removes definition of Windows 10 Mobile from Windows SDK

There has never been an official announcement that Windows 10 Mobile is being phased out, but there has been portends from various sources, including Idea from the likes of Joe Belfiore.

Now another such sign has appeared, in the form of the latest Windows 10 SDK, which appears to omit the definition of Windows 10 Mobile from the SDK, meaning apps using the latest version of the SDK  will not be able establish if they are running on a Windows 10 Mobile device or not by calling the GetProductInfo function.

Removed from the SDK is PRODUCT_MOBILE_CORE which is the formal name for Windows 10 Mobile.

The move suggests that future versions of Windows will not find its way to Windows 10 Mobile, and that besides bug fixes the OS will not get any further significant updates.

This is in line with Belfiore’s tweets from October 2017.

With a successor in the form of Andromeda already rumoured this is of course not groundbreaking news, but as usual when we have these signs a formal blog post from Microsoft setting out the Windows 10 Mobile situation would be appreciated.

As is, however, the OS will remain supported until December 2019, but we can expect UWP apps who use features in the latest Windows SDK to become increasingly less compatible with Windows 10 Mobile, suggesting once again the last Windows 10 Mobile loyalists should really be making their plans well before that deadline.
