With 2018 getting closer by the hour, we bid our final goodbyes to WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8 and Groove Music. As announced by Microsoft a couple of months ago, today will be the last day for you to access Groove Music Pass. As for WhatsApp, the company announced that it is ending support for older devices which included the good old Windows Phone 8 as well.

As a goodbye let’s look back to how Microsoft ended up here. Back in 2006, Microsoft launched their first Mp3 Player called Zune which would go on to be one of the biggest flops for the company. Although it did paved way for what was about to come. Later on, Microsoft introduced Zune Music Pass which was similar to Apple Music or Google Play Music. It was later in 2011 when Microsoft realized the problems with Zune and discontinued all the Zune hardware. In the following year, Microsoft discontinued Zune services and moved to Xbox Music and Xbox Video for digital media content delivery. Xbox Music and Video were made available on Windows 8 PCs and Xbox consoles. Microsoft also made them available to users on Windows Phone. In November 2015, Microsoft retired Zune Music and transferred all its subscribers to Groove Music. Now as we move to 2018, Microsoft is retiring Groove Music and all the subscribers will be moved to Spotify. Groove will continue to exist on your devices but you won’t be able to use the Music Pass. You can still play songs from OneDrive or from your local drives. After today, you won’t be able to access song anymore, but you can always download your songs and store them in OneDrive.

As for WhatsApp is concerned, the company has said that due to the lack of users they won’t support old platforms and urged users to upgrade in order to use their service. So with the arrival of 2018, we bid our final goodbyes to both Groove Music and WhatsApp. We hope to “See you Again” in the future.
