Microsoft issues emergency patch to disable the last emergency Spectre patch

The patching of the Speculative Execution vulnerability has not been going too well recently, with Intel telling users to avoid the patch they released to OEMs as it was causing reboots.

Now Microsoft has itself issued an emergency out of band Windows Update (KB4078130) which disabled the patches for the Spectre Variant 2 bug (CVE-2017-5715).

The patch addresses the same Intel reboot issue, with Microsoft saying it needed to disable their patch after Intel  admitted that its software was causing “higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior” that led to “data loss or corruption.”

The anti-patch patch applies to Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8.1, and all versions of Windows 10, and Microsoft is also offering advice on how to disable the old patch via registry keys.

Users who can not wait for the patch or want to read more can find the information at Microsoft here (desktop and server.)
