Microsoft was first with releasing Intel’s fix for the recently discovered processor flaws for their Surface line of laptops and tablets, and now it seems HP may be next. Users are reporting that HP has started publishing updated BIOS for some of their laptops on their website confirmed via a Powershell verification script to include a fix for the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities in Intel’s x86 processors. Unfortunately, it appears HP has not started pushing out the fixes, so, for now, users will need to check HP’s support website for updates to their BIOS. The Meltdown and Spectre Side-Channel Vulnerability exploit design flaws in processor speculative execution, normally used to speed up processors and use them more efficiently, to access areas of memory normally inaccessible, and could allow javascript on a website to steal passwords and other data from your PC. The flaws are difficult to fix, but remediation attempts at various levels of the software stack, from the processor to the OS to the browser have already been released. Microsoft today announced a partnership with Seattle-based Adaptive Biotechnologies to decode human immune system using AI and machine leaing with recent breakthroughs in biotechnology. Their goal of the project is to create a universal blood test that reads a person’s immune system to detect a wide variety of diseases including infections, cancers and autoimmune disorders in their earliest stage so that they can be effectively diagnosed and treated. In addition to this partnership, Microsoft has also made a substantial financial investment in the company. Imagine a world with an “X-ray of the immune system.” This would open new doors to predictive medicine, as a person’s immunological history is believed to shape their response to new pathogens and treatments in ways that are currently impossible to explore. The impact on human health of such a universal blood test that reads a person’s exposure and response to disease would be, in a word, transformational. “This announcement comes at a time of inflection in healthcare and biotechnology. Cross-play PC and Xbox title Resident Evil: Biohazard has been permanently reduced to $29.99. Launched earlier this year, Resident Evil 7 is set 4 years after Resident Evil 6, in the fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana in the Southe United States. It features a new protagonist named Ethan Winters, a civilian who offers fewer combat skills than most previous Resident Evil main characters. Ethan is searching for his missing wife, Mia, which leads him to a derelict plantation mansion, home of the Baker family. It features a new cast of characters and while it will still offer a variety of weapons including pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws there is also more emphasis on puzzle-solving, resource management, and healing herbs. Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin yesterday launched the “Destination: Mars” exhibit at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It is an interactive exhibit using the Microsoft HoloLens which will allow guests to “visit” several sites on Mars, reconstructed using thousands of real imagery from NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover, which has been exploring the Red Planet since August 2012. Buzz Aldrin, an Apollo 11 astronaut who walked on the moon in 1969, will serve as “holographic tour guide” on the jouey.
