Tired of Project NEON and transparency in Windows 10? Here’s how to turn it off

Microsoft has been updating its Windows 10 apps for a while now, adding in elements from what was internally dubbed “Project NEON”. These updated apps now resembled something between MacOS and Windows 7’s Aero theme, with a glass-like transparency and blur effect applied to the sidebar and Windows of many in-box apps.

Not all users are a big fan of this, with some preferring the classic flat design of Windows 10 for usability and perhaps even aesthetic purposes. Luckily, there’s a single option in the OS to turn all that off.

Removing Transparency from Windows 10

1. Open the settings app and navigate to Personalisation > Colours
2. Locate the “Transparency effects” toggle and toggle it off. This turns off transparency for both the Start Menu and Action Center, in addition to the updated apps as well.
