How to activate HDR video on the Windows 10 Spring 2018 Update (RS4)

Microsoft introduced support for HDR calibration with Windows 10’s Fall Creator Update, but this was limited to select PCs with out of the box HDR support.

With the uamed Windows 10 Spring 2018 Update (RS4), Microsoft is adding support for more screens. While the HDR calibration update came earlier, Microsoft aounced the change to Windows with Windows 10 Build 17093.

With this update, users on the Windows 10 Spring 2018 Update, will be able to use their SDR( Standard Dynamic Range, or Regular) optimised screens to view HDR videos.

How to run HDR Video on SDR screens

1. Open the Settings App and Navigate to Settings > Apps > Video Playback
2. Turn on “Stream HDR Video”. If your PC is ruing the Fall Creators Update and doesn’t have an HDR capable screen, this option will be greyed out for you. With Windows 10’s Spring Update, Microsoft is adding a HDR calibration tool, which can be run to prepare your screen for HDR video. This tool is in early stages at the moment, but will be completed with the RS4 release.
